Climate in Portugal
From the rugged west coast to the sun-drenched Algarve, travelling with Portugal Nomads takes you through a range of microclimates. In the north, around Ericeira, the Atlantic Ocean brings refreshing temperatures and perfect waves for surfing. As you drive south via the fishing village of Sesimbra, the climate gradually takes on a more Mediterranean feel. By the time you reach Lagos or Carvoeiro, you’ll feel like you’re fully immersed in the south.
Spring and autumn are ideal seasons for exploring southern Portugal, especially May, June, September and October. The temperatures are pleasant and perfect for road trips, hiking and soaking up the sun. The best part? You’ll get to enjoy it all with far fewer travellers around than during the peak season.
July and August are also good months to travel. It’s a little busier, but since you’ll mainly be staying along the coast, the temperatures are generally quite manageable.
The seasons in Portugal
Winter – December to March
Winter is a quiet time in Portugal. With temperatures between 15 and 18 degrees, you can still enjoy plenty of time outdoors, although you should expect more rain.
Spring – March to June
In spring, Portugal wakes up from its winter slumber. May and June are especially magical. With temperatures between 20 and 25 degrees and clear blue skies, you can make the most of every day. The ocean is pleasant for a surfing session in Ericeira or Arrifana, while the Algarve’s beaches are already perfect for soaking up the first rays of sunshine.
Nature is in full bloom and the terraces are starting to fill up again. Without the summer crowds, you can still experience the authentic side of fishing villages like Sesimbra. In the Algarve, take your time exploring the spectacular cliffs around Carvoeiro.
Summer – June to September
July and August bring plenty of sunshine, but also plenty of visitors. Temperatures regularly rise above 30 degrees, especially in the Algarve. The west coast offers some relief thanks to the Atlantic breeze, but even there, you’ll notice that it’s high season. Beaches are busier and popular spots like Lagos are much more crowded, so keep this in mind.
Autumn – September to December
September, October and November turn Portugal into a true road tripper’s paradise! The summer heat gives way to pleasant temperatures and the crowds begin to disappear. The sea is still wonderfully warm after the summer months, perfect for a swim near Ericeira or Lagos.
In the Algarve, enjoy an Indian summer that seems to go on forever. The weather is perfect for hiking along the Fisherman’s Trail or the Seven Hanging Valleys Trail.
